2+0+1+2+0+2+0+2+1+2+1+2+0+1+2+0+2+1 = 21

The number 21 can be associated with a tarot card named “The World”. Unity and wholeness are amongst the symbolic meaning of this card. The number 21 can also be read as 2+1=3 - where the number 3 stands for the holy trinity, or past, presence and future.

«20 + 1» are 21 pencil drawings in the format of 20x20 cm. All drawings are drawn on Fabriano paper and mounted in a frame, painted directly on the wall, with the dimensions 21x21 cm. Opening date for the exhibition is 20.01.2021.

The work is based on traces of coffee from 21 coffee cups. Abstract traces of what has been, or can be symbolic of what to come. Fortune-telling from coffee grounds or tea leaves is an old tradition from Asia, Middle East and the Ancient Greece. The method is referred to as Tasseography.

The drawings have been meditation excercises where each drawing is a complete universe, created within its own borders. At the same time they are a reflection over the past year and the time we are living in. Twenty drawings from 2020 and one from 2021 where the mind has been circling around questions like; can a community be governed by tasseography, or numerology? Or is it possible for us to find our inner source and with increased awareness and total presence make external dogmas redundant?

Notice the coffee bean under the drawing - the red dot signalising a sold artwork has been replaced with coffee beans!
